Nyjer Seed has been shown to be one of the most popular single seeds for finches by a test known as PROJECT WILDBIRD, which ran from 2005 to 2008.
Each bag of Nyjer Seed is filled with niger from Africa and Asia, not Indian niger or the North American thistle plant (for which is has been incorrectly nick-named). Though these oilseeds are very small, they have a lot of nutrients to take care of a finch's energy needs. Our Nyjer seed provides a guaranteed 25% fat, 15% protein, and 25% fiber.
It is important to note that niger seed is required to be heated to prevent germination before it can be sold in the United States. Our Nyjer seed follows all required guidelines and will not sprout if seed falls on the ground by your feeder.
Nyjer seed, also known as thistle seed or niger seed, attracts the following finch species: American Goldfinches, Purple Finches, Pine Siskins, House Finches and Lesser Goldfinches.
Storage Instructions: Store your Nyjer seed in an air-tight container to keep them from drying out. Birds will not eat dried out Nyjer seed.
